Your profile#

A profile is the public page of one person. It is what opens when someone selects your name on a record, in a list or on the team page. This page describes the profile screen as you see it on your own profile. Everyone else sees the same screen without the parts that are for you alone, which are marked below.

You reach your profile by finding your card on the People screen and selecting your name, or by selecting your name wherever you are credited on a record. The address is contributor/ followed by your portal ID. Anyone can open a profile, signed in or not. The heading is the person’s name. The portal has no menu entry that goes straight to your own profile.

A strip of page links near the top has Overview, Projects and Datasets. This page describes Overview. Projects and Datasets list the public projects and datasets the person is credited on. On your own profile they are headed My Projects and My Datasets.

The notices#

At the top, above the header, a notice appears when nobody is using the profile:

  • An unclaimed profile shows a notice such as This profile was created so Ada Lovelace could be credited for their work. They haven't claimed it yet. with a disabled Claim this profile button. The button’s hint reads Sign in with ORCID to prove this profile is yours and take it over.

  • A deactivated profile shows a notice such as Ada Lovelace's account is no longer active. The profile stays so their work remains credited.

A claimed, active profile shows no notice.

The header#

The header shows:

  • the person’s photo, or their initials

  • a badge reading Claimed profile, Unclaimed profile or Inactive account, and a badge for each portal role the person holds

  • the person’s name, followed by an ORCID icon when they have an ORCID iD. The icon links to the ORCID record and says when the iD is unauthenticated.

  • the organization the person is primarily affiliated with, the place of that organization and the languages the person works in, each shown only when set

  • a Share menu

  • a REST API button, which opens the profile as JSON

  • an Edit profile button, which only the person themselves sees, and a Community Manager for a profile nobody can sign in to. See Edit profile.

  • a disabled Contact button, which everyone but the person sees

The figures#

Three counts: Projects and Datasets, which link to the two tabs, and Member since, which shows the year and month the person joined. A person with no account on the portal has a dash under Member since, with the line Has no account on this portal. The project and dataset counts cover public records only.

About#

A card headed About, with the person’s biography. When there is none, the card says No biography has been added yet. On your own profile it says You haven’t written a biography yet. and offers a Write your biography button, which opens the biography field on the Edit profile screen.

Projects and Datasets#

Two cards, Projects and Datasets. Each lists up to five public records the person is credited on, with a count beside the title and a View all button. Projects that are in progress come first, then the most recently changed. Each row shows the record’s name, and for a project its status. A row also shows an Owner badge for a project the person’s organization owns, and when it was last updated.

When there are none, a project card says Not credited on any public project yet. and a dataset card says Not credited on any public dataset yet. On your own profile they say You aren’t credited on any public project yet. Credits are added by the people who manage each project. and the same for datasets.

Roles#

A card headed Roles, listing the roles the person holds on records, most held first, each with the number of records and a bar. Without any, it says No roles recorded yet. Roles appear here once a credit says how the work was done.

Cards without content#

A Publications card and a Map card are on the page, and Recent activity sits in the column on the right. Each holds a placeholder that describes what the card is meant to show, and no data.

The column on the right#

  • Your profile, a checklist only you see, marked with the badge Only you can see this. It counts how many items are in place, such as 3 of 5 in place. Items still missing come first, each with a Fix link where the portal can take you to the field, and the rest follow. The items are A profile photo (recommended), ORCID iD connected by signing in with ORCID, A short biography, A primary affiliation and Links to your other profiles (recommended).

  • Identifiers, a table of the person’s identifiers, such as their ORCID iD, and their Portal ID with a copy button.

  • Links, the person’s other web pages, each named by its site. Without any, it says No links have been added.

  • Affiliations, the organizations the person belongs to, with those that ended under Previously. Without any, it says No affiliations have been recorded.

  • Frequent collaborators, the faces of people credited on the same records. Without any, it says Nobody else is credited on the same records yet.

Everything counted or listed on a profile is limited to what the viewer may open, so a profile never names a private record to someone who cannot open it.
