How to fix a profile that will not claim#

This guide helps when you signed in with ORCID to take over a profile made for you and the profile did not become yours. Each entry starts with what you see. Most fixes need a portal administrator, because only an administrator can change an identifier, reactivate a profile or merge two profiles.

There is no ORCID button on the Sign in screen#

The portal has not set up ORCID sign-in.

Ask the portal’s administrators to set it up. Until they do, you cannot claim a profile this way.

The profile still reads “Unclaimed profile”#

The profile does not hold the ORCID iD you signed in with.

Open the profile and read its Identifiers card, then compare the ORCID iD there with the one on your ORCID record. If they differ, ask an administrator to correct the profile. See How to correct a profile that nobody has claimed.

You have two profiles: one with your credits and one you signed up with#

You made a new account by email, and signing up by email does not take over an existing profile.

Ask an administrator to merge the two. The merge moves the credits onto your account. See How to merge two person records.

The profile reads “Inactive account”#

An administrator deactivated the profile, and a deactivated profile cannot be claimed.

Ask an administrator to reactivate it. See How to reactivate a deactivated profile.

The profile reads “Claimed profile” but it is not yours#

Someone has already claimed it, and a claimed profile cannot be claimed again.

Ask an administrator to look at the claim. They can read the claiming audit log and, if it was a mistake, merge or correct the records. See Claiming audit logs.

The portal gave no reason when the claim failed#

The portal writes a refused claim to its claiming audit log and does not show it to you.

Read the profile’s badge and notice to find which entry above applies, then ask an administrator. See How a profile is claimed for why each case is refused.
