The Sign up screen is where you make an account on the portal. An account lets you create projects and datasets, edit the records you are given access to and use the API as yourself.

You reach it by selecting Create account on the Home screen, or by selecting Create one on the Sign in screen. The address is account-center/signup/.

The page is laid out like the Sign in screen. On a wide screen one half holds the form and the other half names the portal. On a narrow screen only the form shows.

The form#

A card headed Create your account, with the portal’s logo above the heading. It holds:

  • Email

  • Password

  • Password (again)

  • First name, with the help text Your given name.

  • Last name, with the help text Your family name.

  • the Sign Up button

The password must pass the portal’s checks, which refuse a password that is too short, too common, all digits or too like your other details. A field that fails shows the reason beside it.

The ORCID button#

Below the form, after a line reading or, is an ORCID button. It starts the same ORCID sign-in as on the Sign in screen. When the portal needs more from you after you return from ORCID, it shows a page headed Sign Up, with a line saying you are about to use your ORCID account to log in. The page asks you to complete a short form, which includes a Display name described as how you would like to be addressed within the portal. Select Sign Up to finish.

If a profile with your ORCID iD already exists and nobody has claimed it, the portal links it to your new account. See How to claim your profile with ORCID.

After you send the form#

The portal does not sign you in straight away. It shows a page headed Verify Your Email Address, saying it has sent you an email, and to check your spam folder if you do not see it. Opening the link in the email confirms the address and signs you in. You arrive on the Home screen, headed My Dashboard.

When sign up is closed#

A portal that does not take new accounts shows a page headed Sign Up Closed, with the line We are sorry, but the sign up is currently closed. instead of the form. Administrators create the accounts on such a portal. The page is shown when an administrator has switched sign up off, and when the portal accepts accounts by invitation only. The Create account link on the Home screen can still be there in either case.
